#5 - Housing Options

Updated: Dec 2, 2023

My amigos, it is great to see you again on day 5 of our series!; Living in Colombia like a Millionaire. Today, we are going to explore options for lodging and housing in El Eje Cafetero.

There are a variety of high end hotels in Colombia’s major cities such as the Marriott and Hilton Hotel, and these are excellent options for less experienced travelers. However, rather than staying at a chain hotel, we recommend accommodations outside of the city in this part of the country. As you drive through the countryside here, you will see colorful colonial houses and buildings surrounded by palm trees, fields of coffee plants, and lush groves of bamboo that provided the inspiration for the Disney movie Encanto, with their natural surroundings, colorful facades, balconies, wraparound porches, and spacious rooms that evoke a bygone era. Nowadays, the majority of these architectural gems have been transformed into hotels and offer you a quiet place to stay and experience life in the Colombian countryside. Many of these hotels have all the modern conveniences of life while some are more on the rustic side, but either direction you choose to go, you will be able to relax and get back in touch with nature.

Moving on to housing, the most lovely housing developments in El Eje Cafetero have designed houses that keep the essence of these former colonial houses, with colorful facades and balconies, yet offer the convenience of modern construction. While many expats desire independent properties, we recommend renting/buying co-property in a gated community. Despite having to deal with the rules and regulations of a Homeowners Association (HOA), you will enjoy the benefits of well-maintained green spaces, other common areas (such as pools, gyms, and barbecue areas), as well as 24/7 private security. And most conveniently, the HOA’s management will take care of shared infrastructure (driveways, plumbing, outdoor lighting, etc.) and the maintenance of the common spaces.

Amigos, make sure to watch our upcoming video to learn more about different housing options and their prices in Ej Eje Cafetero!

¡Chao!
